Sati Pasala or How to Practice Mindfulness

Sati Pasala Bundoora, Australia – February 2020

Sati Pasala Bundoora held seventeenth session at Nick Ascenzo Community Centre, 2 Boronia Avenue, Thomastown, 3074 VIC, Australia in February 2020. Altogether 13 children participated in the session and the majority of them were 12 years and under.

  • Understanding Mindfulness (S1):  The topic of the session was ‘Mind Full or Mindful’. The emphasis was to brainstorm what mindfulness is, how to be mindful, where we can be mindful, benefits of being mindful and the four basic postures of practicing mindfulness. To assist the session content two video clips were shown.  As an opening to the practice children were exposed to the sound of the singing bowl and their experience was discussed.
  • Guided Practice (S2):  To help with mindful walking and sitting, Sati Pasala video clips on mindful walking and sitting was shown to children. This was followed by mindful walking and sitting which were practiced indoors.
  • Mindful game (S3):  Mindful activity ‘The Great Raisin’ was introduce where children were given an opportunity to eat a raisin mindfully. They were initially instructed on how to explore this experience by using all five senses (seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting). The children enjoyed the activity and commented on how they observed the colour and texture variation of the raisin and how they tasted it.
  • Reporting experiences (S4):  Children’s experience on mindful walking, mindful sitting and mindful activity was brought up in the group discussion. Children were instructed on to start a mindful journal and were given note books to write their mindful experiences and bring it to the following Sati Pasala sessions.
